During this meeting, we discussed…

Key Concerns/Challenges:

  • Pollution from current or former industrial or waste management sites
  • Inequitable access to amenities, resources and safety along rivers/riverfronts
  • Lack of resources, access, access points and recreational opportunities of all kinds

Key Priorities/Opportunities:

  • More recreational opportunities along the Calumet and Little Calumet Rivers as well as Cal-Sag Channel
  • Address water quality and pollution clean-up before future activities and amenities can happen
  • Develop a Green Industrial Corridor and remove pet coke piles and other toxic open-air storage

Big Ideas:

  • Major Taylor Trail connect to Wolf Lake
  • Develop the Hegewisch Environmental Center
  • Floating treatment wetlands for water quality and other innovative approaches
