The 606: Opening Day Festivities

Opening festivities for The 606 will celebrate the community spirit that launched this project with lively, participatory events that welcome visitors from throughout Chicago and beyond. Everyone is invited to join one of the dozens of processions that will crisscross on the trail-top throughout the day, or plan one of your own.

There will also be sports, arts and nature-centered activities underway at Walsh, Churchill, Milwaukee/Leavitt and Julia de Burgos, the street-level parks that are part of The 606.

The central gathering spot on Humboldt Boulevard between Wabansia and Cortland will feature a music stage, a SummerDance stage, local restaurant vendors, and dozens of hands-on activities for all ages.

Opening weekend celebrations will take place throughout The 606 on Saturday, June 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and conclude on Sunday, June 7th with a pancake breakfast from 10:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. at the Ridgeway Trailhead, 1821 N. Ridgeway Avenue, Chicago.

The opening weekend festivities will include:

  • -Celebratory ribbon cuttings at each access ramp
  • -A procession featuring decorated bikes
  • -Community flag-making and flag-waving procession
  • -The Illumination Hour at dusk
  • -At Humboldt Boulevard: two music stages, beer, food vendors, SummerDance, and -participatory activities.
  • -New, temporary arts installations
  • -A pancake breakfast on Sunday, June 7
